The fault in our stars (2014)

Fair warning: This is a tragic story

Directed by Josh Boone
Based on The fault in our stars by John Green
Starring Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort

Sixteen year old Hazel Grace Lancaster is depressed. Not because of regular teenage angst, but because she is dying of cancer. She had been diagnosed with Stage IV thyroid cancer at the age of thirteen with ‘an impressive and long-settled satellite colony’ in her lungs. Her lungs is no longer working properly and she has to depend upon artificial means to support respiration. Thus she has to drag along an oxygen tank with a transparent tube attached to her nostrils all the time.

Hazel’s mother pushes her out of her cocoon to go to a Cancer Support Group, where she wants her to make some friends. She hates going there and tries her best to remain at home with her reality shows, but her mother is adamant. At the Support Group she gets to know Isaac, who suffers from a rare type of eye cancer.

And it is also here that she meets Augustus Waters who is also a friend of Isaac. Just like that, her life is changed forever.

Augustus Waters, who many people imagined to be flawless after watching the trailer of the movie, is a cancer survivor himself. Having been diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, he had to get his leg amputated. It does not take long for Augustus to sweep her (and us) off her feet with his charming conversation, quirky remarks and infectious positive attitude.

So what happens next? Hazel, who compares herself to a grenade, might blow off any day. She is attracted to him but does not want him to get hurt. But he does not seem to be put out by it.

A very emotional movie which will most probably tear you up.
