As the name suggests, the story concentrates on our dear little forgetful fish, Dory and her long lost family. Before meeting Marlin and thereby joining him in his search for his son Nemo, Dory had been searching for her family: about which she had forgotten because of her short term memory loss.
A year later, having settled down with Nemo and Marlin, she suddenly remembers about her family and decides to go looking for them. She persuades Nemo and Marlin to accompany her. And they do, which marks the beginning of a brand new adventure.
